The best puzzle games don’t just have clever puzzles, they make you feel clever yourself for solving them. That said, compared to first-person puzzlers like Antichamber, Manifold Garden, and Portal, or even less deliberately mind-bending options like The Talos Principle or The Witness, Maquette’s recursive roadblocks are actually fairly simple to get through. Later chapters also bend the formula in interesting ways that, while generally slightly less successful than the central model idea, do offer some neat twists on its own setup. There’s lots of tricky little solutions to find that I won’t spoil here, but I especially loved moments like the first time you leave your own “model” world and end up in the giant version of the one outside it (though Maquette could seriously use a sprint button to reduce the slow movement of those sections). Thankfully the puzzles themselves can be very entertaining to solve, if not as exciting as I’d hoped Maquette’s recursive concept could be. That’s not the biggest letdown ever, but it does undercut the life that’s been imbued into each area and makes the act of solving puzzles and interacting with this world feel almost entirely disjointed from the story being told. The most glaring example of this is when you visit the memory of a county fair, which is full of booths with ring toss games, target shooting, and even a giant ferris wheel… all of which are immovable props you’re just meant to smile at and walk past. There’s essentially nothing to interact with beyond the extremely limited set of items meant for solving puzzles, and it never felt rewarding to go off the beaten path or look around at stuff unrelated to the singular task at hand. Walking through an abstract representation of a memory will be accompanied by the realistic bustle and sound effects of the actual place.īut while its environments are stunning to both look at and listen to, I also found them oddly inert. Dropping a key into the model will make tiny jingling sounds as it bounces around, and that’s paired with deep, metallic clanks behind you from its larger counterpart. Those impressive aesthetics also extend into its otherworldly particle effects as objects phase in or out of place, as well as its top-notch audio design. Its use of vibrant colors and ornate, warped architecture is some of the most beautiful I’ve seen in any puzzle game. Part of that immediate appeal is thanks to how jaw-droppingly gorgeous Maquette can be. It’s a phenomenally clever concept, and one that’s an absolute joy to mess around with when you’re first getting your bearings. Drop an item – like a key or a bridge – into the model and a to-scale version will appear in the same spot behind you, only much larger – alternatively, pick something small out of the model and you’ll suddenly have a tiny version to use in your regular-sized world. In the center of each chapter’s contained puzzle area is a little model (a maquette, if you will) of the terrain around you. In 1E, I could make a combat-focused character with no ability score higher than 14 and make it work well enough. Or having fun).įrom reading the forums for a while before actually playing, I got this idea that in 2E, you pretty much have to minmax to have a 50% chance of success at the things you're supposed to be good at. In practice, this just means more bookkeeping, and more time KO'd (and therefore, not playing the game. Not totally sure how to word this, but my assumption is that Paizo wanted to foster a sense of investment by making enemy attacks more dangerous: Players will feel more engaged if their HP is constantly fluctuating. In going from cleric to monk, my AC jumped from 16 to 22. With 18 dex and +1 striking handwraps, I'm looking at a +11 on my highest attack, which routinely has less than a 50% chance to hit. I've been playing a cleric, recently switched to monk (same character, we just needed another combat-type since our fighter had to drop out) with the Medic dedication. We're currently level 4, and I've noticed some patterns. All but one of us are 1E vets, with myself having played from the very start all those many years ago. To save investors from the complexities of research, the gist of our findings are usually distilled into bite-size nuggets of information during our webinar sessions conducted on every deal.Įmbry Hills checked off a multitude of boxes for what RealVantage was targeting: mid-segment residential-for-rent low-density suburban location economically vibrant city with sound fundamentals that was projected to outperform the rest of the U.S.A. Shortly after the onset of the pandemic, RealVantage published a research piece and has since executed the strategies we have shared in the article – that is, deploying into residential-for-rent, logistics, neighbourhood retail and non-traditional debt – which aligned us with the long-term structural drivers. Late-2020 was a period dogged by economic uncertainties and disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic but these are exactly the circumstances that reward quality research and executional efficiency. The success of this deal can be attributed to several factors, and this article will provide you with more insights into the anatomy of RealVantage’s investment in Embry Hills. Given that most of our investors are based in Singapore, on a Singapore-dollar adjusted basis, the returns would be even better at an IRR of 40.3% and an ROE of 73%. While the returns of Embry Hills were projected at an internal rate of return (IRR) of 12.7% with a return on equity (ROE) of 57%, the actualised returns generated an IRR of 37.8% and an ROE of 68% over an investment period of 20 months. These deals account for close to a third of the 33 investments we have embarked on so far, since the inception of RealVantage in April 2019. With the latest divestment of our Embry Hills Multifamily Opportunity (“Embry Hills”), we have delivered 10 investment exits in total to our investors – either at or higher than the projected returns. While you certainly can often “fix it in post” close attention to lighting will mitigate you having to do so as often. The more time you allocate for lighting your screen and subjects, the less time you will spend shooting, re-shooting and editing for the effect. Great keying can be had with just a little more effort.īy now you realize there are three essential elements to generating a successful chroma key production: lighting, shooting and editing. Good keying can be accomplished with relative ease if close attention is given to lighting, shooting and editing details. While a myriad of both dedicated chroma key programs and software that includes keying capabilities make the editing job easier, some can be more difficult than others to apply. This story looks at three essential elements in generating a successful chroma key.Ĭhroma keying, also referred to as blue or green screen effect, still requires attention to lighting and acquisition. The producer also had to find and pay experts at lighting, shooting and editing the segment if she even thought about doing it for a commercial production. The Netricsa display is the central hub where you’ll get all the necessary information on missions, NPCs, main characters, enemies, weapons, and gadgets. For these highlights, however, I’ll brush over them. To beat it in seconds, I gathered all enemies together with the Rage drink (allowing Sam to run at high speeds) and then tossed a blackhole grenade in between everyone and voilà everything is dead.Īs you can already tell, there’s a ton of content to experience in Serious Sam 4 Croteam really left nothing to spare in their return to the main series. Without gadgets, it’s a huge pain to get through since you’re battling snipers, Werebulls, etc. For example, there’s one level in France where you fight through a large open-cut mine against hundreds of enemies. When I mean overpowered, I really do mean that. Are those pesky hordes of hundreds of enemies starting to wear you thin because you’re constantly dying? Well, here’s a blackhole grenade that will kill every single grunt on the battlefield. Boss fight giving you a hard time? Well then here’s a mini-nuke launcher and… it’s dead. Nothing beats being able to slow down time for everything but yourself, and then mowing down any and all enemies around you. The gadget system is where the game starts teetering on ridiculous and overpowered, though that’s no insult to the game whatsoever. Nothing better than visually knowing how overpowered you’re getting Don’t be too stressed to complete those side-objectives though, since you’ll eventually unlock all the weapons and attachments as you progress through the main story anyway. Other highlights include completing side-objectives which reward you with either a new weapon, a helpful attachment, or a set of deadly gadgets. Skills include getting loot drops for enemies that you kill, being able to dual wield various types of weapons, reload and shoot at the same time, and mounting a Werebull. This skill tree has two branches with different implications for each, and each new skill can be unlocked by every Artifact of Might that you will find. system is returning from Serious Sam VR and is a welcome addition. The list goes on, so expect plenty of hard-hitting action and unique enemy variants throughout the whole game. These hordes of enemies include some new and old foes including the Processed, Belchers, Beheaded Rocketeers, Werebulls, and Scrapjacks. The new Legion System has been implemented so battlefields can teem with hundreds, if not thousands, of enemies. As a result, cooperative play is back in full force in the 4-play online co-op mode, and believe me when I say it makes the game a whole lot easier when you’re working alongside a team. Croteam has said that the main idea behind the development of Serious Sam 4 is “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” so a lot of the gameplay elements from previous Serious Sam games shine into this one. Serious Sam 4 is set across 3 different countries, and you’ll play a total of 16 levels across them (including the 2-minute prologue). There’s something… cathartic about mowing through enemies with ease As you can imagine, this game is chock full of timed one-liners (though these one-liners and the rest of the comedy is pretty cringey) and lots, and lots, of blood and gore. The last fighting resistance is the Earth Defence Force, which is led by the one and only Sam “Serious” Stone and his… err… unique squad of commandos. Humanity is currently under siege by hordes and hordes of aliens, all of which are operating under the thumb of Mental - the iconic and returning villain across the Serious Sam series. But, of course, like with every Serious Sam game the gameplay is what shines. In fact, it’s pretty average, so don’t expect that you’ll be tied to this game solely for its story. I will put it out there now Serious Sam 4’s story isn’t very good. Now, Croteam has returned in full force and brought Serious Sam 4 with them. Serious Sam 3: BFE was moderately well-received ( 72% on Metacritic), and since then there’s been numerous spin-off titles like Serious Sam: The Greek Encounter and Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope. It’s crazy to think the last time we had a new main series Serious Sam game was almost 10 years ago. |
